Kate's Photo Journey...to be continued

Kate's journey into photography is a story of curiosity, resourcefulness, and dedication. Her interest was sparked during a trip to San Francisco in 2003, where she was teaching Environmental Education at the Alliance Redwoods Conference Grounds. During her stay, she purchased her first camera, a Kodak EasyShare, which marked the beginning of her artistic exploration. At that time, her equipment was basic, and she was still honing her eye for photography without much technical knowledge.

Upon returning home, Kate's interest deepened when a friend loaned her a Canon 20D camera while she spent the summer watching two Great Horned Owls grow up. This experience introduced her to the benefits of using better equipment, inspiring her to improve her gear gradually. Recognizing her financial limitations, she turned to online sources and yard sales to acquire older equipment. A significant discovery was that Nikon lenses, which she received as a gift, could fit newer Nikon DSLR bodies. Kate learned to shoot manually, mastering exposure and focus, and even bought adapters to use Canon lenses on Nikon bodies, expanding her creative possibilities.

In 2009, Kate embarked on new adventures, including her first hike to Coldrain Pond in New Durham with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Although the purpose of the hike remains a mystery, the clothing in photos says SPNHF. That same year, she participated in the Woods, Water, and Wildlife Festival organized by the Moose Mountain Regional Greenway for the second time, further fueling her passion for nature and wildlife photography.

By 2010, Kate faced a setback when she found herself out of work. Determined to find purpose, she began volunteering at Laudholm Farm in Wells, Maine, and the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center. These experiences not only allowed her to give back to the community but also provided ample opportunities to practice and refine her photography skills. Inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer's words in Braiding Sweetgrass, Kate views her photography as an act of reciprocity—giving back to the world through her images, just as she has received so much from her environment and experiences.

Kate's dedication to her craft is evident in her continued use of older Nikon bodies and lenses, which she has complemented with newer gear acquired from yard sales and online marketplaces. Her equipment setup typically includes two Nikon d5500 cameras—one with a standard/macro zoom lens and the other with a macro telephoto—carried comfortably in a Cotton-Carrier-style vest. Her focus has been on macro photography, collaborating with organizations like the Maine Entomological Society and the New Hampshire Butterfly Monitoring Network.

Looking ahead, Kate dreams of upgrading her equipment to include a water-resistant camera with auto-focus and silent operation, ideal for her indoor and outdoor event, and wildlife photography. She is committed to continue to give back and hopes that others will support her efforts.

Did you find your way here after a hike where Kate was the volunteer photographer? Perhaps you've enjoyed her images or seen her byline on one of many environmental websites. Kate is a naturalist and largely self-taught photographer with a passion for capturing the beauty and urgency of the natural world. Having photographed hundreds of environmental events for nonprofit organizations—entirely self-funded—she is now asking for your help to upgrade her equipment. Your support will allow her to continue providing high-quality, impactful images that support conservation efforts. Ways you can help:
